The World’s Youngest Photographer?

April 22, 2010

For the most part, photographer Ruby Ellenby is a typical artist; she’s finicky, prone to mood swings and has somewhat fickle tastes.

Or it could just be that she’s three and a half years old.

The daughter of two music photographers, Ruby has been taking pictures ever since she could ask to see her mother’s camera. And now through the end of April you can see the fruits of Ruby’s labor at Moshi Moshi, a sushi restaurant in San Francisco that’s displaying 22 of her finest prints.

According to this article in the San Francisco Chronicle, Ruby’s preferred mediums include a Nikon Coolpix, an iPhone and a Vtech kid’s camera. Her photos are “from a kid’s point of view,” and include such subjects as a bottle cap lodged in a pot hole, the headlight of a motorcycle, and her favorite ruby slippers.

Ruby’s fans insist that her photography is worthy of recognition because she shoots what she knows. Others wonder if she’s just a kid with a camera.

Regardless of how you feel about Ruby’s level of talent, you have to give her parents credit for fostering and nurturing her creativity. And according to an employee at Moshi Moshi, the exhibit has garnered a good response, and people are shocked to learn that the photos were taken by a three and a half year old.

If you’re interested in seeing a gallery of Ruby’s art, visit her website where you can also purchase a 5 X 7 print for $40. Proceeds from sales will go to fund her college education and perhaps even art school tuition. That is, if she doesn’t lose focus.

Hmmm, I think my pictures should be on sale. If I draw a squiggly line on a page does that count as thought provoking art??
